The Queens Symphony Orchestra gave one of its several free summer concerts at the Seuffert Bandshell in Forest Park on Sunday, August 12, playing a medley of songs by Gershwin, Sousa, and Morton Gould among others, under the direction of Constantine Kitsopoulos.

At a nearby picnic grove, a father celebrated his young son's birthday with a family picnic, and other families grilled hamburgers and sausages sending fragrant aromas into the air. A sea of cars became suddenly colorful as a cluster of balloons bounced overhead.

Sunbathers enjoyed the lawn at the Forest Park Overlook, while children splashed in the frog fountains at the William Sobelsohn Playground. Others found a shady bench at Raoul Wallenberg Park at which to read a book. Ball players shot hoops, while at Lynn's Riding School in Forest Hills, horseback riders clip-clopped through local streets on their way to riding trails in Forest Park.

The weekend was cool enough for outdoor dining and a food market on Metropolitan Avenue displayed tempting water melons and other fruits and vegetables for those who preferred to dine at home.

"Take my picture, take my picture," chorused three friends as they posed for a photographer, miraculously finding joy at being photographed even in the digital camera age.

A near perfect summer weekend demonstrating that staying close to home can be as fun-filled as any vacation at the beach or up in the mountains.
